Fairly Legal came back after it’s season premiere with “Start Me Up,” one of my favorite episodes of the series thus far. I’ve always felt this show had great potential and finally it seems to be living up to it with captivating characters and absorbing storylines.

First I’ll get one bit of silliness out of the way. Kate walking through the office in a towel would under normal circumstances seem ridiculous except for one important point. It’s Sarah Shahi. I’m a heterosexual female and even I’ve got to say the woman is gorgeous. So if Kate Reed feels the need to make her way from the executive washroom to her office in a towel who am I to complain.

That the towel scene led to Justin walking in on her changing could have been played for laughs. I was so glad it wasn’t. The hurt and awkwardness between the two was palpable. Justin wanted a chance to explain and make amends but Kate was still far too angry to want to hear the details of his indiscretion.

Ouch! I do hope that sometime this season these two get to hash things out no matter where their relationship is headed. But let me be clear. I want them together?eventually. Their chemistry melts the screen.

The main case was really thought provoking. I’ve never known too much about organ transplants other than I’ve checked the little box on my license to donate mine once I no longer need them. Perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise that as with most other aspects of life, there’s a large amount of politics involved.

One of my favorite twists was that there were no angels here. Roxanne wasn’t just a woman playing by the rules waiting for her liver transplant. She and her husband mortgaged their house to donate $60,000 to the hospital in the hope of moving up on that list. Was that the right thing to do? If you or someone you loved were in their position would you hesitate to do the same?

Even the FBI agents had a valid point. The testimony of the Japanese mobster could save a lot of lives. Was that worth a pass on the transplant line? How do you choose whose life to save when there were so many on the line.

It was the shades of grey that kept me fascinated throughout the hour.

Even with the lawsuit between the fashion designers, my first instinct was to side with Lauren. You remain loyal to your client. But her client certainly held little respect for her and was quick to make a public spectacle of telling her so when he didn’t get his way.

But Ben was also being loyal to his client and easily proved that she had the better case and would be a more lucrative client for the firm into the future. Ben’s presence at Reed & Reed and the fact that they now have three partners will certainly make things more interesting.

The end of the episode held two of my favorite moments. First was Kate handing Justin the divorce papers that she’d signed. The look on his face conveyed devastation and heartbreak. He loves her. He doesn’t want to lose her but is it too late?

And as much as I want them together it was great to see Kate finally make a decision about her personal life and move forward.

Then much to my delight she made the effort to get those insurance papers to Lauren and even told her that although she expected Lauren to be every bit as good as Teddy, she didn’t have to actually be Teddy.? It’s time to stop asking what would Teddy do and decide what Lauren will do??

Fairly Legal’s cast of characters is finally growing up and the complex relationships that are evolving make me crave much more of this unique and wonderful show.

Military homecomings?are the kinds of moments families will always hold dear. And when a soldier returns from Afghanistan and transforms into Captain America to surprise his two young sons, we are all reminded of how precious and moving such reunions can be.

The video is a recent addition to the Welcome Home Blog (“the No. 1 site for videos of surprise military homecomings”), which has 30,295 subscribers, but its 400+ videos have been viewed nearly 87 million times.?

In this video, a young boy dressed as Captain America answers the doorbell with his younger brother (dressed in PJs) close behind. To his surprise, it’s a full-size Captain America!?

The boy has no idea it’s his father, who he thinks is still in Afghanistan, until the unmasking at breakfast. Watch how he and his brother react, and see if you’re not grateful, just a little bit, that we can be witness to an intimate family moment such as this.

Experimenting with plant lignin as a replacement for lithium and other metals, scientists create a rechargeable battery–but much work lies ahead to translate it into a usable power source

Despite decades of predictions that a fully electronic, paperless society is almost upon us, we still live in a world populated with printed documents. This insatiable demand for plant cellulose?based writing and packaging materials may end up having a silver lining: a component for a new type of low-cost, Earth-friendly rechargeable battery.

Researchers Grzegorz Milczarek from Poznan University of Technology in Poland and Olle Ingan?s from Link?ping University in Sweden, have combined a polymer with a waste material from the paper and pulp industry to create a new kind of battery cathode, which today are mostly made from nonrenewable metals such as lithium or cobalt. Specifically, Milczarek and Ingan?s used lignin, an organic substance binding the cells, fibers and vessels that make up wood. Plants are made up of as much as 30 percent lignin, is the second-most abundant renewable carbon source on the planet after cellulose, according to the International Lignin Institute in Switzerland. Each year, paper processing generates between 35 million and 45 million metric tons of a dark waste product known as brown liquor, which is rich in lignin derivatives.

Most batteries consist of electrochemical cells with two electrodes?an anode and a cathode?and are filled with an electrolyte. The aggregate effect of the chemical reactions taking place within the electrolyte creates a flow of electrons between the anode and the cathode, resulting in the discharge of electricity.

Milczarek and Ingan?s combined lignin derivatives with a polymer known as “polypyrrole” to make their test cathodes, which varied in thickness. The insulating qualities of lignin derivatives combined with the conductivity of polypyrrole create a composite material that effectively holds an electric charge, according to the scientists, whose research appears in the March 23 issue of Science.

The inspiration for the research came from the process plants use to convert light energy to stored chemical energy. In photosynthesis, electrochemically active molecules known as quinones transport electrons and protons, Ingan?s explains. Animals also make use of quinones in metabolism, “to build the pH gradient which drives synthesis of ATP, or adenosine triphosphate,” he adds. If nature could create such a renewable metabolic process, the professor of biomolecular and organic electronics reasons, why not consider it as the basis for charge storage in a renewable system?

The researchers have much work ahead of them, and Ingan?s cautions that it is premature to compare their prototype battery system with inorganic two-electrode batteries fabricated with metals. “There are many things to do in order to improve the charge density of the electrode, which is what we are doing now,” Ingan?s says.

The biggest disadvantage to the proposed approach, however, is that the electrodes lose their charge within hours when they are idle. The researchers hope that different types of lignin derivatives could solve the problem. Given the diversity of plant life on this planet, there is no shortage of samples for the researchers to study.

The Will is the first and most important estate-planning document. A Will allows you to insure that your property goes to the people you choose. Additionally, a Will allows for the best care for your children by the people you choose.

What is probate?
Probate is a court-supervised process for transferring a deceased person???s assets to the beneficiaries listed in his or her Will.
Probate helps to distribute your assets after you have died. There are well-defined rules that are followed, and the Court is very good at resolving estates; however, there are some major disadvantages to Probate.
One disadvantage is that Probate is a public process. There is no privacy. Your estate plan and the value of your assets will become a public record. In addition, because lawyer fees and executor commissions are based on a statutory fee schedule, a probate will cost more than the management and distribution of a comparable estate under a living trust.

Probate Cost

Probate fees are about 5% of the estate; $8,000 for an estate of $150,000; $46,000 for an estate with a gross value of $1,000,000. Then add an additional 4% for attorney fees and if there is a house, another 1% for establishing the appraised value.
For many, a Trust has many advantages, but it cannot accomplish everything. A Living Trust cannot avoid income tax (although estate taxes and Probate fees may be reduced or eliminated). During your life, you have full use and powers over the Trust. For tax purposes, since you still retain control, you are considered to be the owners of the Trust. Therefore, you are taxed on all income from Trust property on your regular tax return. No annual tax return is needed for the Trust.

Almost everyone should have a Trust.
A trust will allow certain assets to avoid probate altogether. For many people creating a Trust equals a large savings of money and time.
